JOHOR BARU: The Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) Johor chapter hopes the government probe of the incident involving a Chinese tourist at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) could be completed soon to safeguard the country’s image.

The chapter’s immediate past chairman Kenny Ngi , who is also Johor MATTA Fair project secretary, said such incidents could tarnish Malaysia’s image as a tourism destination.

“Previously when I was state MATTA chairman, I also received similar complaints but this was about 10 years ago. These incidents could affect the country’s image. “We hope the matter could be looked into as soon as possible as it also causes tourists to choose other neighbouring countries over Malaysia,” he told a press conference on the upcoming MATTA Fair here on Wednesday .

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, after a spot check at KLIA on Sunday , assured Malaysians that a thorough investigation will be carried out on the recent incident involving a Chinese tourist.“Action would be taken ... if any inappropriate practices were uncovered that could jeopardise Immigration operations," he had said.

Last week, Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing highlighted an incident where a woman visitor from China claimed she was held back after arriving in Malaysia and asked to pay to be allowed entry.
