Roxanne Bowden-Grosse and Charles Grosse are shown at Nova Scotia Supreme Court in Dartmouth on Friday after the man accused of murdering their son Zachery in October 2020 was found guilty of the lesser offence of manslaughter. - Steve BruceA Head of St. Margarets Bay man has been found guilty of manslaughter in connection with a fatal stabbing in Dartmouth in October 2020.
The verdict means the jury rejected Rhyno’s claim that he was acting in self-defence when he stabbed Grosse three times in the neck during a confrontation at Grosse’s apartment building on Primrose Street on Oct. 22, 2020, just before 6:30 p.m. “A Black man will never get justice in a white privileged world,” Roxanne Bowden-Grosse told The Chronicle Herald.
“It doesn’t matter what the sentence is,” Charles said. “My son is deceased. He will never walk this Earth again. This individual gets the opportunity to breathe, to eat three meals a day, to drink water – after taking another man’s life.” Rhyno claims Grosse told him he was “f-----g dead.” When Grosse leaned toward him, Rhyno took his knife out of his pocket and plunged it into the left side of Grosse’s neck.
“While we appreciate and respect the work of the jury members and their verdict, we are disappointed that they did not accept that Mr. Rhyno was acting in self-defence, as it was our belief the evidence was clear that was the case,” defence lawyer Patrick MacEwen said.
