'Acceptable risk': AHS looks to update website to reflect new federal alcohol guidelines

“Many Albertans struggle with alcohol use. Prevention is an important part of Alberta’s recovery-oriented system of care, and this includes raising awareness about the risks associated with drinking alcohol,” said AHS.

Dr. Abdel-Aziz Shaheen, associate professor of medicine and a gastroenterologist at the University of Calgary and AHS, said he’s glad the updated guidelines are opening the conversation about the risks of alcohol consumption. “I don’t actually aim for a dramatic shift or everyone suddenly drinking only one or two drinks a week. But if we get people to be aware and at least cut down their drinking from 20 drinks a week to five or 10 per week, we achieve progress because we lower the risk. It’s all about lowering the risk for individuals.”Article content

“Some people may accept the risk, some people may not,” said Shaheen. “I tell people to be aware of their alcohol consumption. Find your own acceptable risk . . . But I would tell anyone who’s drinking more than seven drinks per week to think again about their consumption, because you’re putting yourself at high risk for many conditions and types of cancer.
