Academics will strike on Wednesday as the university sector finds itself engulfed in industrial action over claims of wage theft and casualisation.
Academics from Melbourne’s four biggest universities will take strike action on Wednesday with other institutions around the countries facing rolling industrial action throughout the week.
Universities across the country will be hit by a wave of rolling strikes and protest action this week.Staff from the University of Melbourne, Monash, Deakin and La Trobe will all walk off the job for four hours on Wednesday morning with a large crowd expected to converge on the Victorian Trades Hall.
“Casualisation has its place, but it was never meant to be the business model on which universities run,” Dr Barnes said.Other universities taking action this week include Newcastle, the University of NSW, University of Queensland, Federation University and James Cook. The union is also incensed by a leaked strategy document from the Australian Higher Education Industrial Association which outlined ways universities could prevent themselves “being roped into multi-employer agreements” and limit wage increases.
