China's Foreign Ministry has criticised Australia's decision to ban the hugely popular social media app on government devices, urging Canberra to 'maintain a non-discriminatory environment' for Chinese companies.

She said reports of the ban had been"noted" and that her government had made"solemn démarches" to Australia through diplomatic channels. Several investigations have highlighted deep links between ByteDance, TikTok's Chinese parent company, and the ruling Communist Party, links which have led the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and New Zealand to impose similar bans. There have also been a number of reports into the amount and type of data harvested by the app, including one by Canberra-based intelligence think-tank Internet 2.0 which concluded it gathered an"excessive" amount of information from users.
Information Commissioner John Edwards said he was concerned about the potential harm to children"profiled" by their usage of the app.
