Exclusive: The ABC's board has taken another hit, with director Fiona Balfour resigning following a lengthy dispute with chair Ita Buttrose over a perceived conflict of interest
linked to her recent appointment on the board of Telstra subsidiary, Digicel.
Telstra is a major supplier of mobile technology and other services to the ABC, which some board members thought was a conflict of interest . People familiar with the board’s processes said Balfour was asked to stand aside in meetings on at least one occasion since initial concerns were raised. Balfour has worked in several sectors including the aviation and financial services industry and sits on boards including Western Sydney Airport and Airservices Australia. She was put on the ABC board in 2021 by then communications minister Paul Fletcher, who tabled the reasons for her appointment in parliament.A spokesperson for Communications Minister Michelle Rowland said they would undertake a process to replace Balfour.

Gersh, the executive chairman of Gersh Investment Partners and director of the Sydney Institute, was appointed to the board by the Turnbull government in 2018. This means the federal government will be forced to replace two directors while ABC employees separately decide whom to appoint as their staff-elected director.
