Heston Russell’s lawyer has maintained her client had 'hurt feelings' after an ABC article claimed the special forces soldier was involved in the shooting of an unarmed prisoner in Afghanistan. Mr Russell is suing the national broadcaster and two of its investigative journalists, Mark Willacy and Josh Robertson, over two articles published between October 2020 to 2021. Sue Chrysanthou told the court they’re seeking damages on three parts – The preparation and publication of the article, a press release issued to accompany the second article, and failure to put the allegations to Heston Russell. Justice Michael Lee took offence to the press release – which the ABC admitted was inaccurate – and accused the national broadcaster during Wednesday’s court hearing of “grandstanding”.
