DEVELOPING character is the most important element of an all-round education.
“When I reflect on men and women who do very well in their careers and lives, it’s not about how many A*s they got in their A-Levels – that opens the door but after that, it’s their character that dictates their life chances and how life goes from there,” he said. Describing it as the “second curriculum”, he added that activities such as sports, music and drama are where many students discover who they are, find things they are passionate about, and grow their confidence and self-knowledge.“Nobody can truly thrive or flourish in life if they don’t feel like they belong,” he said, adding that to belong, one needs to feel like one can be oneself, and to feel seen, acknowledged and valued, irrespective of one’s ability or cultural background.
“Sometimes, the best learning experience happens for young people when they don’t even know they are learning; they are just playing and spending time with other children,” he said.
