He says drug companies know they have more chance of getting approval for a drug to treat diabetes than one to treat obesity. The same bias applies to government bodies that determine whether a drug should be subsidised.

Its active ingredient, semaglutide, works by inducing satiety. This feeling of being satisfied or “full”, suppresses appetite, which leads to less food consumption and weight loss. According to the medical news website WebMD, Ozempic can cost uninsured Americans more than a $US1000 a month and many flock to Canada to save $US700 a month. The Danish multinational that makes the drug, Novo Nordisk, offers price deals on its website.

“In terms of nutrition, if these people are eating a suboptimal diet, they are not getting the right nutrients. On the drug, they’ll eat less of that diet which is not going to help them,” says Wittert. “By analogy, if you drive a Maserati, and you put ethanol blend in your car, and your car doesn’t go very well, putting less ethanol blend in is not going to help the situation.

It targets the relevant biology and lowers blood sugar, reduces weight, and controls food intake in people who have no capacity to do so for themselves.
