Hotel Venite is housed in a 200-year-old building and has retained the ambience of a bygone era with its tiny wrought-iron balconies, creaky wooden floorboards fashioned from Portuguese shipwrecks, and earthenware walls covered in graffiti doodles and scribbles in nearly every language – relics of the days when Venite used to rent rooms to travellers.Photo by Andrew Marshall
For a handful of rupees, you get a stainless-steel platter with small, fitted bowls usually containing a piece of fried fish, dry and wet vegetable dishes, roti, pappadams, rice, pickle, and dahl . Thalis provide a great opportunity to taste many Indian dishes at one sitting and a chance to explore regional variations.
Diners constantly eddy in and out of the narrow doorway of the restaurant’s distinctive blue facade. Inside, below whirring fans, waiters in faded uniforms negotiate the crowded narrow thoroughfare carrying stacks of thali plates.
