List to the mournful tradition still sung by the pines of the forest; The beauty of the Annapolis Valley has long inspired poets, artists, and visionaries. In the 1970s and 1980s, there was a man who painted a picture of the land of L’Acadie; one awash with green vineyards, where wineries, restaurants and country inns dot the landscape. An almost Rockwellian image of rural life.
Anyone that met Dial can attest to his charm. Carl Sparkes, owner of Devonian Coast Wineries says, “While I only met him on a few occasions, Roger was always generous with his time, his stories and in demonstrating his continued passion for Nova Scotia and for our wine industry in particular.” It is a quality also admired by Hans Christian Jost, whose family emigrated to Nova Scotia in the 1970s, and launched the second winery in the province, Jost Vineyards , shortly after Dial.
Dial was also instrumental in establishing the Farm Winery Act, allowing for direct sales to consumers visiting the wineries. This may have been Dial’s greatest legacy, as it would allow wineries to attract visitors to their farm winery shops, tasting rooms and eventually on-site restaurants, a necessity in the highly competitive beverage alcohol marketplace.
Unfortunately, as much as Dial did on behalf of local wineries and grape growers, he was not able to sustain his own business, as the original Grand Pré shut its door in the late 80s. Dial painted a vision that was bigger than himself, but it was those first brushstrokes, the image of an Annapolis Valley Oenotria that became the masterpiece that is the Nova Scotia wine industry we know today.
