'It kind of felt like it flew by,' St. John's-born Stanley Cup champ AlexNewhook_ says of surpassing the 100-game mark in the NHL. Sports scribe nikmercer caught up with the Avalanche sophomore this week.

Colorado Avalanche forward Alex Newhook checks Vancouver Canucks forward Conor Garland to the ice in a Jan. 20 game at Rogers Arena. - Bob Frid-USA TODAY SportsThe lives and careers of professional athletes can sometimes be broken down into milestones and dates.

“It's a pretty cool milestone,” he said. “It's one of those things that you kind of look back and it didn't seem to me like it was 100 games, it kind of felt like it flew by.”Hitting that mark is nice, but then the goal quickly shifts to doing everything you can as a player to make sure you hit 150 or 200 games played.

On a team laden with players who have logged significant minutes in the NHL and who often check in with the younger guys on the team, Newhook has often found himself going to Andrew Cogliano, a veteran of over 1,000 NHL games. Since the calendar flipped to 2023, Newhook has been on a roll. He’s scored seven points in the 11 games in January, which includes his first career three-point game.

St. John’s native Alex Newhook has over 100 NHL games punched and is now focused on adding to that total every chance he gets. He’s recently picked up his scoring and has maintained a strong defensive game all season. - Perry Nelson/PostMediaThe lifestyle of a professional athlete can be hectic. During the season, there's little time for home life, aside from homestands, but it's everything he dreamed about and expected.
