Political watchers warn that Mr Kishida is running out of time to salvage his leadership.

– The heat has been raised on Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida after a district that was long a stronghold of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party fell to the main opposition party in by-elections on April 28.and a tanking economy, is running out of time to salvage his leadership, warned political watchers.

But the moment of reckoning came despite the LDP putting all its eggs in one basket in Shimane. While three Lower House seats – all vacated by LDP lawmakers due to either death or scandal – were up for grabs, the party chose not to field any candidate to contest the Tokyo No. 15 and Nagasaki No. 3 seats.

The last time the LDP suffered such a triple whammy in by-elections was in April 2021. Five months later, then Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga resigned. But political scientist Mikitaka Masuyama of the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies did not fancy Mr Kishida’s chances in a snap election, while Dr Nakano described such a move as “foolhardy”.

But all this has failed to reverse the eroding public trust.
