A few people who didn’t know might walk into that environment and say ‘oh, those Jones’, they’re so messy … they have so much stuff.’ But the dining room table for me, as a little kid, I loved the dining table. The reason I loved the dining room table, there were so much interesting things for a little kid to see, all the pictures, or to read and I loved to read. I read long before I started school.
Jones said her collection started after asking her mom if she could do the same – save articles and photos from newspapers and other sources. The boxes did become a bit problematic as she moved around, starting with her university days, but Jones said she never felt it wasn’t worthwhile to make sure they stayed with her and she became kept adapt to hiding them under “pretty African cloth” and incorporating them into her living space.
While the scope caught her off-guard, she was still determined to save the collection because she understood the value of so much history being preserved in the writing and photos. She contacted the Nova Scotia Archives and professors from different universities and whenfrom St. Mary’s University - Associate Professor and Department Chair - Social Justice and Community Studies – displayed the greatest interest, Jones decided the historic Halifax school is where they should be.
“It’s early stages,” said Lesley Brann, Colchester East Hants Public Library head of circulation and adult services. “It’s a long-term project we’re working with St. Mary’s and Lynn on.”
