With time running out in the third period, Walling showed the instincts that served him well in his lengthy journalism career by leaving his seat and making his way to become one of the first reporters to interview Henderson at the game's conclusion. "The game was over, CTV covered the game and Bill Good Jr. was there with Paul Henderson right in front of Brian Williams and me. The surprising thing was CTV kept Henderson for just one minute. Williams knows Henderson a bit because he was working for CHUM in Toronto and said to Henderson, 'hey Henny over here.' So Henderson comes over. Williams and I have Henderson for five or six minutes all to ourselves.
He retains an incredible memory for trivia, easily snapping off answers to questions about little known starting baseball lineups from long ago to queries about the most played songs from decades past. When he returned to Halifax, the reporter who eventually became well known for his distinctive voice and his dogged pursuit of answers at press conferences, had set his ambitious sites on his next assignment, the Summit Series.
