Social media platforms are facing growing calls to impose protections against the publication of content depicting criminal activities amid concerns of online material acting as an enabler of violent crimes amongst younger Australians.
'A huge problem': Content moderation on social media under scrutiny as violent online material linked to spike in youth crime
But experts suggest tackling youth crime should be conducted through a preemptive rather than reactive lens, beginning with media giants working to contain the circulation of material glamorising criminality. “I really think that these huge companies need to take more responsibility to take these videos down more quickly so that they're not inspiring more young individuals to get involved with these type of activities.”
“We're seeing young people who are committing these activities and then actually uploading some of their media around to their site as well, to further show off to the friends and anyone who's following them on these networks,” Ms Mallett said. Tech giant Meta, which owns platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, has faced loud criticism as of late regarding its guidelines on content moderation.
