Mont Lingard has just completed his sixth book on the history of the Newfoundland railway and the people who toiled on it. The latest work recalls many of his personal stories as a railwayman.A lifetime spent around the Newfoundland railway left Mont Lingard with a treasure trove of stories to share.
After graduating high school at his native Bishop’s Falls in 1948, Lingard immediately went to work on the railway, starting out as a student fireman.Hats off to Marina Sexton: Newfoundland's 'hat lady' donates some of her collection to Memorial University Corner Brook theatre “I heard they were taking off the passenger train and I said if the passenger train comes off I give it 10 years and railway will be gone. In fact, it lasted 20 years.”Lingard started the work on this recent book three years ago.A picture of a rotary, the equipment used to clear the huge amounts of snow plaguing the railway at times, struck a chord.
“I get talking to people sometimes and they get fascinated because they can’t imagine there was a railway but no roads,” he said. “They’re well respected and I’m very particular about getting my dates right,” Lingard continued. “I explain when this was built, or when something else was started, but the books also explain all the sidings, all the bridges and grades and water shoots and for every town I did a little history when it was settled.”
One would think that at 92, Lingard would be content to rest on the project, especially considering his challenges with typing and dictation as he’s aged, but a storyteller is always a storyteller.
