Officials say a woman is dead and her five-year-old son is in critical condition after they fell into the gorge near the Cave of the Winds complex in Niagara Falls, New York.

When officers arrived on scene, Rola said, they used the elevator within the Cave of the Winds to get to the gorge’s base. The mother, meanwhile, did not survive despite life-saving efforts. Rola said her body was recovered by the New York State Police Aviation Unit via helicopter and has been received by the Niagara County coroner.
