The 1988 Games catapulted Calgary onto the international stage and the event\u0027s impact on the city was sweeping.

1. The hottest ticket in the world on Feb. 13, 1988 was a ticket to the Opening Ceremonies of the XV Winter Olympics. Pictured are some of the 22,500 helium-filled balloons that floated above the spectators at McMahon Stadium during the ceremonies. Then-Prime Minister Brian Mulroney said the event was stunning and one of the most beautiful he ever witnessed, adding: “I’ve seen a lot of ceremonies.

6. The spirit of the Games could be seen everywhere in Calgary. Many Calgarians decorated their homes — and cars — with signs supporting Canadian athletes. 10. Robyn Perry lit the torch signalling the start of the Games; the then-12-year-old athlete represented the hopes of future Olympians. 14. Chinook winds took Calgary temperatures to a high of 17 C at one point during Olympic competitions. Calgary was even warmer than Miami on several days, leading to snow problems on the slopes. Later in the Games, hurricane-force winds at the top of Mount Allan caused the postponement of downhill competition events.

19. Remember when Olympic mascots were recognizable creatures? That was the case at the Calgary Games, where polar bears became the mascots of choice. Much-loved mascots Hidy and Howdy made approximately 50,000 public appearances over the years. They’re pictured here with another well known, admired Calgary character — then-mayor and future-premier Ralph Klein.

24. The Games held many moments of both victory and defeat, with one of the most heartbreaking being that of American speedskater Dan Jansen. Jansen fell during the men’s 1000-metre event on Feb. 18, 1988. A favourite to take the title, he had also fallen in the 500-metre a few days earlier, just hours after learning his sister had died of leukemia.

28. To coincide with the Olympics, a hot air balloon event was held in Calgary at the same time. Between 140 and 150 balloons a day were launched from the Shaganappi Golf Course in the Kodak Hot Air Balloon festival. A seven-storey Tyrannosaurus rex balloon was just one of the eye-catching flying delights.Article content
