He often arrived before 6 a.m. for volunteer shifts three days a week. He liked to greet surgery patients as they came in the door. Mayer is one of about 300 volunteers working at The Ottawa Hospital’s three campuses. COVID-19 has complicated that work and forced some of it online,as the pandemic begins to loosen its grip on the health-care system.
Mayer was born near Belgrade on Oct. 15, 1926. His father was an ethnic German and worked in a local brewery. As a boy, Mayer liked to borrow his camera and take portraits, but the chaos of the Second World War interrupted his plan to pursue a photography career.
