Faith and tradition brought together a massive crowd of 300,000 devotees in Cebu City for the annual Penitential Walk with Mary and the Traslacion, commemorating the enduring devotion and miracles associated with the Sto. Niño. Religious leaders emphasized the power of miracles and the importance of passing on faith to future generations.
Faith and tradition converged, uniting 300,000 devotees in Cebu for the annual Penitential Walk with Mary on the morning of January 17, 2025. This event celebrated the enduring devotion and miracles associated with the Sto. Niño . Reverend Father Erijeo Cinco, in his homily during the Traslacion mass at the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño in downtown Cebu City, emphasized the profound power of miracles and the critical importance of transmitting faith across generations.
He reminded the faithful that the miracles, which originated with the discovery of the Sto. Niño image, have transcended time, continuing to inspire and strengthen the devotion of successive generations. 'In the numerous accounts of miracles since the discovery of the Child Jesus' image, up to this very day, they have been passed down to our ancestors,' he stated in Cebuano, underscoring the enduring impact and relevance of these stories. Father Cinco explained that the gathering of the faithful at the Traslacion mass was not a mere coincidence but a testament to a deeply rooted tradition. He emphasized how faith compels people to unite in devotion to the miracles attributed to the Child Jesus.Drawing upon the responsorial psalm, Father Cinco reminded the congregation that they were both beneficiaries and guardians of Sto. Niño's blessings. He pointed out that the faithful not only receive miracles but also preserve the narratives and faith that sustain these miracles. He asserted that devotion to Sto. Niño is not a solitary experience but a shared legacy, passed down through generations. Meanwhile, the police reported that the Penitential Walk with Mary and the Traslacion proceeded generally peacefully and without incident. Lieutenant Colonel Maria Theresa Macatangay, Deputy Director for Operations of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO), stated that the event ran smoothly despite the large crowd. Last year, approximately 250,000 participated in the penitential walk, while around 400,000 attended in 2023. The CCPO deployed over 1,000 police personnel, supported by barangay tanods, Task Force Kasaligan members, and other government agencies, to ensure peace and order. 'Ang assessment sa Walk with Mary is generally peaceful and orderly. So far, wala tay na-monitor nga incident that will cause alarm,' said Macatangay (The Walk with Mary was generally peaceful and orderly, with no alarming incidents reported). She highlighted that despite the dense crowd along Osmeña Blvd., the procession successfully and safely delivered the Virgin Mary's image to the Basilica without any reported injuries. Two hours before the procession, crowd control ropes were strategically positioned. Concerns regarding a potential stampede on the narrow Colon St. were addressed by spacing and dispersing the crowd to prevent congestion. Following the mass at the Basilica, the Traslacion procession continued to Mandaue City, where it was greeted by Mandaue City officials and local church leaders. On the eve of Fiesta Señor on Saturday, January 18, the solemn foot procession will commence. It will begin and conclude at the Basilica, traversing Osmeña Blvd., Gen. Maxilom Ave., Imus Ave., and M.J. Cuenco Ave.
