Radio network 2GB has terminated embattled broadcaster Chris Smith’s contract following complaints about his alleged behaviour towards several women after Sky News’ Christmas party at the weekend.
Smith’s colleagues at Sky News, Rita Panahi and Andrew Bolt, are separately calling on their company’s executives to terminate his contract with the 24-hour news network. Smith was stood down from Nine Radio and Sky News indefinitely on Sunday for allegedly making lewd comments towards several female colleagues and for touching one woman inappropriately at The Establishment in Sydney.
Nine Radio’s managing director Tom Malone said the company would support Smith, but had terminated his services. In the most recent ratings survey, released by GfK on Tuesday, Smith’s program – which runs from 9am to 1pm – led the weekend time slot with a 12.3 per cent share, up 0.5 points. “I have a recurring problem with alcohol ... it sends me manic,” he said. “I apologise profusely to the women I upset. That’s not the man I am at work ever, as they will all attest. They have been so supportive to me and do not deserve such drunken treatment.”on Sundays at 6pm. He was expected to become the host of a program at 5pm weeknights from 2023.
