In a significant development towards peace, 232 former members of the New People's Army (NPA) voluntarily surrendered in Davao de Oro, marking a new chapter in their lives. Lagdameo welcomed 232 leaders and members of the New People's Army (NPA) who voluntarily surrendered and are set to undergo a reintegration program in Davao de Oro.
'This is not just about surrendering arms, but a new beginning, a new hope for those ready to change their lives,' Lagdameo said during his speech. He expressed optimism that this event would inspire other insurgents to follow suit, encouraging them to seize the opportunity for change. 'To all those who surrendered and chose peace, we salute your courage and your decision to change your lives. What you have done today is an inspiration for others to follow in your footsteps,' he added.Armed Forces chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr., who also attended the event, shared that the NPA's strength has drastically declined, with rebel numbers dropping to 1,111 in 2024 from 2,200 the previous year. As part of their surrender, the former rebels received food packs and kitchen kits from the Department of Social Welfare and Development and P5,000 in financial assistance from the Office of the President, in addition to local support from various provincial officials. The former rebels will also enroll in the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program, which will guide them through reintegration. Military officers and local chief executives, including Bukidnon Gov. Rogelio Neil Roque and Davao Occidental Gov. Franklin P. Bautista also attended the event
