But there’s a considerable power drop, with its new 1.2L turbocharged three-cylinder making 137 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque, and with a six-speed automatic transmission. The outgoing Trax used a turbo 1.4L four-cylinder that made 155 horses and 177 lb-ft. An even tougher sell for Canadians might be that the previous AWD version isn’t carried over, and it’s front-wheel-drive only.
It’s based on the newest version of the Civic Hatchback and uses a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder that cranks out 315 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Shiftless people need not apply, as the sole transmission choice is a six-speed manual. It lays power down to the front wheels, but through a limited-slip differential to help minimize torque-steer.
The styling is more refined, with softer angles than the previous origami-sharp corners and a better-looking front end, and the taller wing is better for rear visibility.and said it “might just be the best enthusiast hot hatch in the segment” but also “attractive as a properly usable car.” That dual purpose is important in this category, since not every enthusiast can afford a second everyday vehicle if the hot one’s a bit much for the street.
The hybrid uses a 1.6L L four-cylinder engine with electric motor, making a combined 139 horsepower and officially rated at 4.8 L/100 km in city/highway driving. The PHEV uses the same engine but rates a combined 180 horsepower, and can drive up to 55 kilometres on electricity alone on a charge. When that depletes, it reverts to conventional hybrid operation. The EV has a 201-horsepower electric motor with 64.8-kWh battery, and a range of 407 kilometres on a charge.
