GEORGE TOWN: With clasped hands and chanting reverentially together, some 2,600 devotees here stood patiently in line waiting for their turn to bow and dip their fingers in fragrant water to symbolise touching the feet of Buddha.

Organised by the Buddhist Tzu Chi Merit Society Malaysia, the event also marked the society’s 57th anniversary.

The celebration at the society’s Macalister Road premises here on Sunday also marked the resumption of the ceremony after the Covid-19 pandemic. Every year, on the second Sunday of May, Tzu Chi chapters worldwide hold a solemn ceremony for a three-in-one celebration of Wesak Day, Mother's Day and Global Tzu Chi Day, to express gratitude to Buddha, parents and all sentient beings.

The event featured an hour-long chanting ceremony where reverence towards Buddha was shown by devotees bowing, dipping their fingers in water and receiving a flower before clasping their palms together in prayer. The event here also included a Zero Burden Bazaar with new and pre-loved items offered with no price tags for those taking them to pay as they wished.
