The first of two missiles fired from an F-16 fighter jet at an unidentified object over Lake Huron on Sunday missed the object, but landed harmlessly in the water, says Gen. Mark Milley, U.S. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

U.S. general cautions recovery of objects over Lake Huron, Alaska, Yukon 'going to take some time'U.S. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark A. Milley speaks during a news conference with U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, not pictured, in Brussels on Tuesday. Both Milley and the White House confirmed a second missile launch was needed to down an object over Lake Huron on Sunday.

"In this case, the missile landed harmlessly in the water of Lake Huron, we tracked it all the way down," said Milley. "And we made sure the airspace was clear of any commercial or civilian or recreational traffic." Milley, like other officials, said he would use the term "objects" to refer to the three most recent incidents. Citing the water depth in Lake Huron, as well as the remote locations and cold temperatures in Alaska and Yukon, Milley cautioned that "it's going to take some time to recover those."
