Hundreds of employees at The Iconic, one of the nation’s biggest online fashion and lifestyle retailers, were underpaid $1 million while some were forced to work in a warehouse so cold that models’ hands had to be edited in photos so they were the same colour as the rest of their skin.
About 800 casual staff, two-thirds of whom had left the company, were underpaid amounts varying from a few hundred to several thousand dollars over the period 2013 to 2020. A spokesperson for The Iconic said an internal review was launched in 2019 and prompted the wider, external review, which reported back in early 2022. Staff who spoke to this masthead said they were not aware of the 2019 review. One former staff member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the payroll problems were “common knowledge internally for years but [human resources] were not receptive or kind when these were raised.
A current employee, who asked to remain anonymous because they still work at The Iconic, said the culture of the company did not match its public image.
