PONTIAN: A total of 170 families from three villages in Benut here were all smiles as they finally received the keys to their new homes for free from state and federal governments.
The Taman Dato’ Hajjah Fatimah Salim housing project was built on 12ha of land in Kampung Parit Makuaseng as a solution for the three villages that have been hit by flooding for years.
“The old house belonged to my late father who passed away 20 years ago,” said the second-generation fishball maker. Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the state government has agreed to provide an 80% discount for land premium payment, while the remaining 20% was paid by the Rural and Regional Development Ministry.
“This means villagers would not have to pay for land premiums, they will also get a new house for free,” he said in a speech at the key handing over ceremony at Dewan Serbaguna Benut here yesterday.
