CHÉTICAMP, N.S. — As legend has it, Chéticamp’s iconic church was finished on time thanks to the priest’s blessing. The winter of 1892-1893 was coming to ...

Charles Dan Roach of Chéticamp has attended this church, Église Saint-Pierre, his entire life. The Roman Catholic cathedral has towered over the rest of the village for 130 years. Its sandstone-based architecture, size and importance in the community makes Église Saint-Pierre one of Cape Breton's most important churches. That’s when Father Pierre Fiset told them not to fear, according to local historian and longtime churchgoer Charles Dan Roach. In August, the Post toured the 130-year-old house of worship with Roach. The 75-year-old attended church there his entire life and had some of his greatest, albeit nerve-wracking, memories there. He remembers directing the church choir for the first time in 1985 in front of a packed church. The church — complete with a main floor and upstairs galleries — can fit more than 500 people.

It took about a year and some prayers to get the sandstone to where it needed to be. But they pulled off Chéticamp’s greatest architectural feat as a community. The village celebrated with its first mass on Dec. 18, 1893. The coming years at Église Saint-Pierre won’t be any cheaper. The inside of the church needs repainting, while floor and ceiling refurbishments are planned.
