NASA reported 124 fatalities after a plane landed without its landing gear, lost control on the runway, and crashed into a wall, causing a fire at Muan International Airport in South Korea on Sunday. According to a Reuters report, the Jeju Air flight 7C2216, originating from Bangkok, Thailand, had 181 passengers on board. It attempted to land around 9 a.m. (0000 GMT) at the airport in the southern part of the country.
This is considered the deadliest air accident involving a South Korean airline in almost three decades, according to agency data. Videos from local media show the twin-engine Boeing 737-800 veering off the runway without visible landing gear before crashing into a wall and exploding. There are also images showing smoke and fire engulfing parts of the aircraft. According to Muan fire chief Lee Jung-hyun, two crew members—a man and a woman—were rescued from the tail section of the burning aircraft. 'Only the tail part retains a little bit of shape, and the rest of (the plane) looks almost impossible to recognize,' said Lee. Authorities have launched a recovery operation to retrieve the victims' remains, Lee added. The two rescued crew members are being treated at the hospital for moderate to severe injuries, according to the head of the local public health center. According to Yonhap news agency, based on a statement by a fire official, it is believed that most of the 175 passengers and six crew members perished. This is the worst accident involving a South Korean airline since 1997, when a plane crashed in Guam, killing over 200 people, according to Ministry of Transport data. Lee said that investigations are underway to determine if bird strike or weather conditions contributed to the tragedy
