The ill-fated motorbanca encountered big waves and strong winds until its engine conked out
At around 4:10 a.m., Coast Guard Mandaue City station received the information from a concerned citizen reporting a distress call.
The motorbanca left Barangay San Vicente in Olango Island without clearance from the Philippine Coast Guard, its Central Visayas spokesperson Lt. Jr. Grade Michael John Encina said. According to the Lapu-Lapu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, the survivors said they hired the motorbanca to bring them to Lapu-Lapu City's Mactan Island as they have been absent from their jobs because the regular sea trips have been canceled.
The PCG Central Visayas has continued the suspension of sea trips for small vessels like the motorbanca due to"unfavorable sea conditions."
