Michael “Billy” Hegedus was 17 when he was shot in the chest and stomach, in what police believe was a robbery gone wrong.Police were called to a petrol station in Inverell about 9pm on October 23, 1996, after being told a teenage boy had been shot. About $36,000 was stolen from a safe in an office in the unit, which was opened with keys and later found discarded, but there were no signs of forced entry. The money has never been found.In May 1997, the NSW government announced a $100,000 reward for information into Michael’s death and a man was charged, but he was not convicted.
